Florene Howard

Florene Peoples Howard was born on December 2, 1937 to the late Charlie and Flora Peoples in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She transitioned peacefully to her heavenly home surrounded by her family on January 26, 2023, where she was reunited with her parents; husband, Lindell Howard; sister, Charlyne Evege; and a host of family members and friends who preceded her. 

She accepted Christ at an early age at Morning Chapel Baptist Church.  She sang in the choir and also served as an usher.

Florene graduated from Douglas High School in 1954.  While in high school her activities included playing the drum in the band and excelling in basketball.  She attended East Texas State University.  She was employed by Winzen Research.

Loving, compassionate, funny, strong, protective and courageous are a few of the words to describe Florene.  Her belief in Christ carried her through her life.  Florene’s husband died at an early age leaving her with two daughters to raise (Sheila, Cherri). She became a single parent with strong support from her parents. 

She was always on the move.  Age did not slow her down.  She cherished her independence  She was always willing to lend a listening ear and a helping hand to help relatives and friends.  She made an indelible difference in our lives.  Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren knew they could count on her unwavering love and support.  No call was ever too early or too late.  Her advice would always point back to God’s will.

She leaves a rich and lasting legacy of wisdom, courage and faith for her children, Sheila Brown (Walter), Cherri Gaines; Grandchildren: Gerred Gaines, Raena Brown, Grant Gaines, Kyra Brown; Great grandchildren: Santi Julian-Gaines, Faith Gaines, Hope Gaines; and a host of family and friends. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at West Oaks Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will follow at St. Luke Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., on Friday, February 3, 2023 at West Oaks Funeral Home.   Arrangements are under the direction of West Oaks Funeral Home. www.westoaksfuneralhome.com
